Fall Arrest
Safety at height, and specifically the provision of safety systems for maintenance personnel, are serious concerns for users, designers and company owners alike.
To assist the client and specifier in meeting the requirements of the 1994 Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) and the 1996 Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations Statutory Instrument No, 1996/1592 Regulation 6, Sarnafil Ltd and Latchways PLC developed the Sarnafil Constant Force post.
The Sarnafil Constant Force post has many advantages over traditional fall arrest systems. Principally, the removal of the need to fasten the fall arrest post to the structure of the building through the fabric of the roof. The Sarnafil Constant Force post is installed after completion of the roofing system and is simply attached to the deck, using either four toggle bolts (steel and timber deck) or expanding anchors (concrete). This is made possible by the unique stainless steel coil within the post, which in event of a fall, absorbs the load.

Once installed on the roof to a project specific design, provided by Latchways Technical Department, the post is waterproofed by welding flashings of the appropriate Sarnafil membrane, to the coated base of the Constant Force post and the main roof sheet. After all posts have been installed and weathered, a stainless steel cable is strung between the posts and connected to the end anchor posts by a simple swageless terminal, hand tightened with standard spanners.
To achieve the optimum system performance, the cable is tensioned to a predetermined level by hand tightening the turnbuckle to the point where the tension indicator can spin freely. Once completed and commissioned by Latchways, the installation is ready for use in conjunction with a load absorbing harness. No further maintenance is required on the system, other than an annual certification by Latchways or replacement of deployed Constant Force posts in the event of a fall.
