Selection Criteria
The designer should determine the type and thickness of the insulation and any integral or separate overlay, including the following criteria:
- Required thermal transmittance (‘U-value’) of the roof
- Compressive strength (where permanent plant or equipment will be applied directly onto the roof surface - see 3.11.3)
- Compatibility with other roofing components
- Required fire resistance
- Acoustic requirements
- Suitability for roof traffic both during and after construction
Additionally, for inverted warm roofs:
- Water absorption
- Resistance to freeze / thaw
- Compressive strength
SPRA requires that its membrane manufacturers provide products only in systems where the insulation selected conforms to relevant British Standard or European Standard, or is certified by the British Board of Agrément or WIMLAS.
