SarnaVert Green Roofing Systems

The use of plants or greening can be dated back to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (circa 550BC).

This is a typical example of this type of roofing being used for aesthetic reasons.  More recently, green roofs have been used for both aesthetic and environmental reasons, with the green roof replacing the green ‘footprint’ lost by the erection of the building.  Today, the significant contributions of green roof to Sustainable Drainage systems are increasingly being recognised.  In Germany, in excess of 80 million m² of green roofing have been installed.

Green roofing systems are principally divided into three main categories:

  1. Biodiverse
  2. Extensive
  3. Intensive
The SarnaVert system provides all of these options, but also enables the specification of hybrid systems to suit the local environment and design requirements.

Beneath any of these roof greening options Sarnafil recommend the use of a warm ballasted system, as this reduces the insulation thickness and effectively controls vapour diffusion.  This is critical in a roofing system that will always contain moisture above the primary waterproofing membrane.

A typically warm ballasted SarnaVert green roof construction will consist of:

  • A structural deck
  • High performance vapour control layer
  • Thermal insulation
  • Sarnafil G476-20TEX or Sarnafil TG66 membrane
Between the primary Sarnafil waterproofing membrane and the chosen greening system, Sarnafil AquaDrain drainage and protection layer will be installed prior to the installation of a growing medium and planting.
