Education White Paper Launched

Following its official launch at the Building Schools Exhibition & Conference (BSEC), the Sarnafil-sponsored ‘Green Roofs and the Education System’ White Paper is now available as a download.

Highlighting the link between the curriculum and the provision of green roofs on educational facilities, the White Paper is written by green roofing authority Dusty Gedge from Livingroofs.org with support from CIRIA, the leading provider of performance-improvement tools and services to the built environment and construction sectors.

Dusty, CIRIA and sponsor Sarnafil all share the belief that, though green roofs are increasingly specified on schools for their strong environmental performance and aesthetics, opportunities are being missed to exploit their learning potential. They hope, therefore, that the paper will spark debate about the use of green roofs as an educational resource.

“This paper shows that, at present, the opportunity to ‘marry’ the use of a green roof as a sustainable technology with its vast educational potential is being missed,” says Dusty. “To address this, we believe a deeper understanding of how green roofs can become central to a school’s core activities and its curriculum is required among head teachers, architects and other influencers so that exceptional green roof schemes can begin to be realised, which incorporate such roofs in the teaching of a wide range of subjects.”
