Green Roof Guidance released

The ‘Green’ roof industry in Great Britain has never seen such interest from local government, NGO’s, client’s, specifiers, suppliers, academics and contractors.  This interest is mirrored throughout the world, with ‘Green’ roofs being advocated as key contributors to helping the battle against the human races contribution to climate change.

Against this backdrop there is a myriad of research, ongoing and published, interest groups and companies all seeking to stake a claim in the market opportunity.  What is lacking is agreed guidance, codes of practice and standards that protect the specifier and client and help ensure the delivery of good quality green roofs.

To bring sense to this rapidly developing market Sarnafil has lead the establishment of the Green Roof Organisation (GRO), together with other experts from green roofing industry, bringing together the major roofing trade associations, Livingroofs.org, Sheffield University, Government organisations and NGO’s with the common aim of creating a body that:

  1. Produces a core set of guidance documents (design, specification, installation and maintenance) that meet the commercial and non commercial interest of the GB green/brown/biodiverse roofing industry.
  2. Can support the relevant UK body representing the UK in the development of the European Standard (a CEN mandate now exists, with a 2 year delivery).
  3. Disseminates, with authority, this information to commercial and non commercial bodies.
  4. Affiliates with relevant bodies worldwide, ensuring best practice and standards are created that meet the requirement of the GB climate and clients.
  5. Establishes GB relevant testing protocols for green roofing with appropriate testing bodies.
